Advertising and Affiliate Disclosure

1. Why this page exists

Reef Network earns money in ways that could, if we were not open about them, look like editorial opinion. This page says exactly how, so you can weigh what you read.

2. Affiliate links

Some links to products and retailers are affiliate links. If you buy after following one, we may receive a commission. You pay the same price either way, and the commission does not come out of your pocket.

Where an article contains affiliate links, you will see a line at the top of the article that says so, before the article begins. Individual affiliate links may also be marked.

3. What a commission does not buy

• It does not buy a place in an article
• It does not buy a rating, a score, or a recommendation
• It does not buy an entry in the encyclopedia
• It does not buy removal of criticism

We include products because we think they are relevant to the subject. If a product we earn commission on is worse than one we do not, we say so.

4. Sponsored content

If a brand pays us to produce a piece of content, that content is labelled Sponsored in the title area, before the content begins, and the brand is named. Sponsored content is not published inside the encyclopedia.

5. Advertising

We may display advertising. Advertisements are visually distinct from editorial content and are labelled. We do not let advertisers see, review or approve editorial content before publication.

6. Free samples and loaned equipment

If a manufacturer sends us a product at no charge, or lends us equipment for testing, we say so in the article that results. Receiving a product does not oblige us to write about it, and does not oblige us to write about it kindly.

7. Partnerships and directory listings

Where a business pays to be listed or featured in a directory or comparison, that placement is labelled as paid. Paid placement never changes the underlying facts we publish about a business.

8. Reviews written by users

User reviews and ratings are covered by a separate policy, see the Reviews and Ratings Policy.

9. Our commitment

We follow the United States Federal Trade Commission’s guidance on endorsements and testimonials. Where you cannot tell whether something is paid for, that is a mistake on our part. Tell us at partners@reefnetwork.com and we will fix it.
